Waverly Jong: Rules of the Game; The Joy Luck Club- Amy Tan; theme
Waverly Jong, Lindo Jong's daughter, reflects on the time in her childhood when she became very good at chess. She played in many tournaments and won very many games. Her life became all about chess and she would go to school, come home, and then think about new moves and future games. Her brothers did her chores because she was "too tired" or "needed to think." Her brothers were even moved into the living room to sleep because it was "too loud" for her too think. Waverly's mother pampered her so she would always be able to play her best at a chess tournament. One day Waverly and her mother Lindo got into an argument. Waverly, the current narrator of this chapter, said when talking about her and her mother, "One day, after we left a shop I said under my breath, 'I wish you wouldn't do that, telling everybody I'm your daughter.' " Waverly demonstrated how she did not want to be shown off. This shows a recurring theme of a mother and daughter's relationship. The theme of this book is mother-daughter relationships. In today's society many have the stereotypical thinking that a mother and daughter will clash at some point which in many cases is true. but, to help prevent this mothers and daughters can try to understand the other more to try and eliminate some of the friction.
